SITE DESCRIPTION

SITE DESCRIPTION:
"The Soddy Mountain hawk lookout is located in southeast Tennessee on the eastern face of Walden's Ridge (the Cumberland Escarpment) in Hamilton County, a short distance north of the town of Soddy-Daisy, TN. It lies at the eastern terminus of Jones Gap Road atop a bluff overloooking Hwy. 111 and the beautiful Tennessee River Valley to the east. The hawk lookout location is state-owned land, and there are currently no restroom or eating facilities nearby. Hawk watchers are advised to bring their own folding lawn chair, sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water, as well as binoculars and a field guide. Caution should be used at all times, especially if children are present, as there is no fence to prevent a fall off the nearby 75 foot bluff. The hawk lookout proper is level ground." *

No Shelter is available, and parking is on a level below the lookout grounds. The climb to the watch site is up a steep bank about 8' high. Other helpful tools might include an umbrella or spotting scope, although on a good day, you might not find time to use either.*

I am happy to welcome a new addition to our crew of Soddy Mountain hawk-watchers. When I arrived on the lookout after church, Tami King was already set up with folding chair, complete with attachable umbrella, backpack, water, snacks, tally sheet, and she was scanning the sky for hawks. Obviously this was not her first time on a hawk lookout!

Turns out she has a 26 years of experience as a hawk counter at Caesars Head State Park in South Carolina, a site that has very good hawk numbers, with some years over 10,000 Broad-wings. Tami recently moved to Collegedale, TN, and was very glad to learn of the Soddy Mountain hawk lookout.  Their loss at Caesar's Head is definitely our gain! She teaches music, specifically strings, at Southern Adventist. Tami plans to be on the lookout whenever possible.

Now for the hawk report: Tami was on the lookout from 10:00-5:00. I was there from 12:30-5-00. Temperature at 10:00 was 62 F,  wind was NNE 2-6 mph, visibility was 60K,  and it was clear. Clouds at noon were only 5%, but at 1:00 they were 20%, and that increased throughout the afternoon to 55% at 4:00. Winds of 5-8 varied from NE to E, and then back to N at 3:00.

Broad-winged Hawk:

Welcome, Tami!!! Glad to have you on board!
Any one else willing???

What a wonderful surprise to find a new watcher manning the watch.  And a blessing that she can continue to watch. And a veteran at that!  So glad they had steady activity today. It is certainly a clue to more to come!

More eyes to the skies is what we always need. So we can

KEEP LOOKING UP!!!!
