SITE DESCRIPTION

SITE DESCRIPTION:
"The Soddy Mountain hawk lookout is located in southeast Tennessee on the eastern face of Walden's Ridge (the Cumberland Escarpment) in Hamilton County, a short distance north of the town of Soddy-Daisy, TN. It lies at the eastern terminus of Jones Gap Road atop a bluff overloooking Hwy. 111 and the beautiful Tennessee River Valley to the east. The hawk lookout location is state-owned land, and there are currently no restroom or eating facilities nearby. Hawk watchers are advised to bring their own folding lawn chair, sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water, as well as binoculars and a field guide. Caution should be used at all times, especially if children are present, as there is no fence to prevent a fall off the nearby 75 foot bluff. The hawk lookout proper is level ground." *

No Shelter is available, and parking is on a level below the lookout grounds. The climb to the watch site is up a steep bank about 8' high. Other helpful tools might include an umbrella or spotting scope, although on a good day, you might not find time to use either.*

It's Spring '22

It is wise to post a little something in Spring or Summer to keep the site active. Even though the watch was not manned this year for spring numbers, we did do a little hawk watching from our yards. One Day in Early April we called Bill to say we were seeing several groups of Raptors moving through. Just happened to notice them, and kept a watch for a couple of hours. Bill began to watch at home and said he also had BWs moving and they were very vocal. We've had one or two more days to see Raptors, but it's obvious that Osprey and Red-shouldered are nesting already. My favorite siting from the yard this year was a Northern Harrier. It is probably the first from our yard. These numbers won't go anywhere to be recorded except as a note in my gardening journal, but it's a great memory. But on a curious note, I checked to see what others were seeing at Hawkcount.org, and happened to see a single day in the thousands on a site I never viewed before. Thousands of BWs were reported early this month moving through Rio and Texas. But to my surprise, here at the end of April/ first of May, Costa Rica has huge numbers of Raptors moving north. Here is their chart for Apr 27. Vultures were the bulk of the count, but BWs and Kites really surprised me. Cool as it can be. Have a great summer everyone:
so where ever you are - Keep Looking Up!!! C
