SITE DESCRIPTION

SITE DESCRIPTION:
"The Soddy Mountain hawk lookout is located in southeast Tennessee on the eastern face of Walden's Ridge (the Cumberland Escarpment) in Hamilton County, a short distance north of the town of Soddy-Daisy, TN. It lies at the eastern terminus of Jones Gap Road atop a bluff overloooking Hwy. 111 and the beautiful Tennessee River Valley to the east. The hawk lookout location is state-owned land, and there are currently no restroom or eating facilities nearby. Hawk watchers are advised to bring their own folding lawn chair, sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water, as well as binoculars and a field guide. Caution should be used at all times, especially if children are present, as there is no fence to prevent a fall off the nearby 75 foot bluff. The hawk lookout proper is level ground." *

No Shelter is available, and parking is on a level below the lookout grounds. The climb to the watch site is up a steep bank about 8' high. Other helpful tools might include an umbrella or spotting scope, although on a good day, you might not find time to use either.*

During the Remnants of Hurricane Irma...Dedication!

     TUESDAY
   SEPT 12, 2017

Schools were closed today on the heels of Hurricane Irma who is fizzling out on our doorstep. And reports of debris on roads, threats of rain and wind did not stop veteran watcher Jim Rowell from taking his morning spot on the watch.  Covering as many kinds of weather as possible continues to add to our whole picture, making the data become more than a guessing game. Numbers of 0 hawks seen are good numbers!!!  Here's Bill's report for today!

"Jim Rowell called this evening to report he went up on the lookout from 8:00-11:45 today. Conditions were not good. Complete cloud cover and then it started sprinkling at 11:45, when he left.

No hawks were seen.

Despite Jim's negative report, I applaud his efforts. You never know unless you show up to look. I think we can look forward to a lot of hawks moving after being "bottled up" by the remnants of the gigantic hurricane Irma. And there is no telling what else may have been swept up here by the storm. I'm hoping for a Magnificent Frigatebird!!!"

We appreciate your dedication, Jim.

Now is the TIME!

KEEP LOOKING UP!!!
