SITE DESCRIPTION

SITE DESCRIPTION:
"The Soddy Mountain hawk lookout is located in southeast Tennessee on the eastern face of Walden's Ridge (the Cumberland Escarpment) in Hamilton County, a short distance north of the town of Soddy-Daisy, TN. It lies at the eastern terminus of Jones Gap Road atop a bluff overloooking Hwy. 111 and the beautiful Tennessee River Valley to the east. The hawk lookout location is state-owned land, and there are currently no restroom or eating facilities nearby. Hawk watchers are advised to bring their own folding lawn chair, sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water, as well as binoculars and a field guide. Caution should be used at all times, especially if children are present, as there is no fence to prevent a fall off the nearby 75 foot bluff. The hawk lookout proper is level ground." *

No Shelter is available, and parking is on a level below the lookout grounds. The climb to the watch site is up a steep bank about 8' high. Other helpful tools might include an umbrella or spotting scope, although on a good day, you might not find time to use either.*

Let Me Introduce You

Let me introduce you to Victoria Fay...the Red-tailed hawk Alix  and Harold Birch will release to the wild tomorrow, Saturday between 3 and 3:30. (9/23/2017)

Alix Parks is one of the team of Happinest Rehab. She deals mostly with Raptors, while the songbird end is headed by Sherry Turner Teas.  Last week as some of you may know,  we released 5 BW Hawks at the Soddy Mtn Hawk watch site, and Harold was left wishing he had the opportunity one day to so the same. To hold one of these majestic creatures in his hands and let it go to live as it should, wild and free, and well. It just so happened that Alix had just the hawk for him. A dark adult Red-tail, who may have matured during her recovery time.

Here's her story in Alix's words:

"Those last two photos are of Victoria Fay the Red Tailed Hawk we will be releasing tomorrow. She is a W Nile Virus survivor from Fayetville. She was emaciated on admission and her tail feathers were winky and she pulled every one of them out! Her new tail that's coming in is red as if she is an adult. She still has a very large and dark belly band. One of the lucky ones! Out of 24 suspected WNV victims, She will be only the 3rd to release. "

Here are some more pictures of Victoria Fay and friends, and her rehab location which Alix sent.

Thanks so much, Alix for the story and picts.  I am excited for tomorrow!

Come if you can. Let's celebrate Harold Birch and his years of Hawkwatching with us, and also the joy of giving this creature life and freedom once again!

Jimmy is going to do all he can to make these last few days of  hawk watch.  We are looking at very blue skies in the forcast next week.  We need to pay special attention this weekend while there are clouds. LOL

It's a cinch, we may need more eyes...we hope.

Come help us
KEEP LOOKING UP!!!
