SITE DESCRIPTION

SITE DESCRIPTION:
"The Soddy Mountain hawk lookout is located in southeast Tennessee on the eastern face of Walden's Ridge (the Cumberland Escarpment) in Hamilton County, a short distance north of the town of Soddy-Daisy, TN. It lies at the eastern terminus of Jones Gap Road atop a bluff overloooking Hwy. 111 and the beautiful Tennessee River Valley to the east. The hawk lookout location is state-owned land, and there are currently no restroom or eating facilities nearby. Hawk watchers are advised to bring their own folding lawn chair, sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water, as well as binoculars and a field guide. Caution should be used at all times, especially if children are present, as there is no fence to prevent a fall off the nearby 75 foot bluff. The hawk lookout proper is level ground." *

No Shelter is available, and parking is on a level below the lookout grounds. The climb to the watch site is up a steep bank about 8' high. Other helpful tools might include an umbrella or spotting scope, although on a good day, you might not find time to use either.*

Facebook Page and Notice for Friday 10/11

We now have a Facebook page, for quick reference on your phones.

https://www.facebook.com/Soddy-Mountain-Hawk-Watch-1608121316117914/timeline/

Just type in Soddy Mountain Hawk on your search bar and it should come up in the list.

We will use it to post" at the moment info".  And pics etc.  Hoping our readers will post pics of hawks from anywhere they see them. But we especially want pictures of you at the hawk watch, or at another hawk watch. Like our page, for notices about what we are seeing on the spot.

Jimmy is making plans to be there tomorrow, (9/11/15) hopefully, a bit before noon, depending on weather.  Folks, if it's raining in Hixson, he won't drive up to see if it's raining on Soddy Mtn.  We do check the weather reports on the hourly report, for Soddy, at this site: The Weather Channel

http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/l/USTN0472:1:US

Jimmy is also planning to be there some on Saturday, (9/12/2015), perhaps with Bill Haley.

Remember, if you have checked the weather, and plan on coming, but want to know from Jimmy if he will be meeting you there, call him:  his number is 423-305-2766.  He doesn't receive texts.  Our phones also don't have Facebook, etc.  We blog and do internet thing from computers.  Sorry, not that we aren't tech savvy, just on a budget and also not inclined to be constantly connected.  But Jimmy enjoys a phone call.

Since the weather broke very late, today, Thursday the 10th, Hawks might be moving as soon as the earth warms up some thermals.  Before that, we do get the morning Sharpies, Coopers, Falcons, etc.  So, there's never a wrong time to be there.  That's it for now.  Be sure to like our Facebook page for notices.  And, post something.  Share to us...we want activity on the page. Share the page to others. There are so many who ask for easy contact that this might be the answer.

And always-
KEEP LOOKING UP!!!
